Dating back to the early 1900’s the bucket hat (also known then as the fisherman's hat, Irish country hat or session hat) is a hat with a narrow, downward-sloping brim and made from many fabrics including heavy-duty cotton (denim or canvas), as well as heavy wool tweed. It was a practical design that protected the fishermen and farmers from the rain and sun. Also known as "Irish walking hats", they were easy to clean and when folded, made them practical for everyday use.
The U.S. military used a version of the bucket hat during WWII and have modified the design through the years and is still used in certain instances today.
During the 1960’s the bucket hat saw a rise in popularity with fashion and pop culture. TV show characters like Gilligan who always wore his bucket hat on "Gilligan's Island" added to the popularity.
With the introduction of the Hip-Hop and Urban cultures of the 1980s and 90s, the bucket hat again became popular with people like LL Cool J and Run-DMC wearing them.
Today, the bucket hat offers comfort, protection, convenience, and style. Available in a wide range of materials, colors, and designs its gender-neutral appeal ensures its continued relevance in today’s fashion world.
